ENGLISH IMMERSION PROGRAM
The English Immersion Program, organized by SMP Muhammadiyah 36 Jakarta, is an educational initiative designed to create an intensive English learning environment that provides students with a deeper and more unique experience. This program aims to enhance students’ English proficiency by exposing them to situations that closely resemble native English-speaking environments, either through visits to English-speaking countries or by inviting native speakers to the school for direct interaction with students.
This year, SMP Muhammadiyah 36 selected Malaysia as the program destination, partnering with two prominent educational institutions: the International Islamic School Malaysia and Sekolah Setiabudi in Selangor, Malaysia. These schools offer a distinct learning experience, with internationally-standardized curricula and environments that encourage the active use of English in every classroom activity.
Throughout the program, SMP Muhammadiyah 36 students had the opportunity to join classes with local students at both schools. They followed a pre-set schedule, attended various classes, and experienced the teaching methods used there firsthand. Not only did they study in English, but they also engaged in discussions, presentations, and group activities—all conducted in English. This encouraged them to use English in both academic and social contexts, which greatly helped build their confidence in speaking and critical thinking.
Beyond academics, the program also provided students with invaluable cultural experiences. They interacted with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds, broadening their understanding of diversity and tolerance. Students learned to appreciate differences, expand their global perspective, and build friendships with international students. This experience not only enhanced their language skills but also helped shape their character to become more open-minded individuals, ready to adapt to diverse environments.
The English Immersion Program is expected to serve as a first step for SMP Muhammadiyah 36 students toward gaining a broader global perspective and stronger communication skills. In the future, SMP Muhammadiyah 36 hopes to see the program grow by involving more students and partnering with educational institutions from other countries, enabling even more students to benefit from this unique and memorable learning experience.
